The world's most expensive paintings
This list of the most expensive paintings in the world and the UK is based around the facts as at April 7, 2006.
The World
- 1. Pablo Picasso, Garcon a la Pipe, $104m, May 2004
- 2. Vincent van Gogh, Portrait of Dr Gachet, $82.5m, May 1990
- 3. Pierre Auguste Renoir, Au Moulin de la Galette, $78m, May 1990
The BBC has a longer list of the world's most expensive paintings, but note, as with this site, the list does not allow for inflation. For example, Irises by van Gogh, which sold in 1987, would be higher up the table in real terms.
In May 2007, the BBC carried an interesting article on the increase in price of post-war art and the extra demand from the Asian market, after a new record was set for work by Andy Warhol when a painting fetched $71.7m (£36.3m) in New York.
The U.K.
- 1. JMW Turner, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio, $35.8m, April 2006
- 2. John Constable, The Lock, $21.1m, November 1990
- 3. Joshua Reynolds, Omai, $14.7m, November 2001
- 4. JMW Turner, Seascape, Folkestone, $10m, July 1984
- 5. John William Waterhouse, St Cecilia, $9.9m, June 2000
