Jimmy Savile

Jimmy Savile or more properly Sir James (Wilson Vincent) Savile was born in Leeds on October 31, 1926.

For 30 years Jimmy Savile was the presenter of the Radio One Weekly Show. A long-standing frontman of Top of the Pops, Savile was also presenter from 1975 to 1994 of the incredibly popular Jim'll Fix It.

Jimmy Savile presented the very first episode of Top of the Pops.

Although it was part of children's entertainment the Saturday evening show was also popular with adults, who watched as Jim fixed it for people who wrote in to fulfil their dreams and be presented with a medallion.

Savile has raised money for many charities but is perhaps best known in that sphere for his fundraising for Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

In spite of his cigar-chomping, Jimmy Savile has run the London Marathon several times, and counts running, cycling and wrestling amongst his hobbies.

He was knighted in 1990. Sir Jimmy Savile had come a long way from his early days as a miner and then a ballroom manager.

He has written a couple of autobiographical works including As It Happens - named after one of his famous catchphrases.

In 2007, Jimmy Savile presented a new series, called Jim'll Fix It: Now and Then on UKTV Gold, revisiting fix-its from days gone by.
