Castaway

The BBC reality TV show Castaway returned to the UK's screens on 9 March 2007 after a gap of seven years.

The BBC's "social experiment" took place in a remote part of New Zealand, whereas the first series took place on a Scottish island.

The first series of Castaway was responsible for bringing to light Ben Fogle, who has since presented numerous TV programmes.

The main BBC One Castaway series was presented by Danny Wallace, whilst Castaway Exposed on BBC Three was hosted by Richard Bacon and featured the castaways' families, along with opinions from survival expert Mike Hawke, anthropologist Mary-Anne Ochota and from viewers.

At the end of March 2007 the BBC decided to move Castaway from its Sunday night slot after ratings slumped to 2.1 million. Instead of its one hour slot at 21.00 on just Sunday, half hour programmes ran at 19.00 on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The series still did not prove a ratings winner. The final episode had just 1.9 million viewers.

As for the series itself, it was won by the most controversial character, Jonathan Shearer.

The BBC has extensive extra features on their Castaway website.
