16 April 2005: Federer's winning streak ends

In a topsy-turvy game 18-year-old French qualifier Richard Gasquet gave away 2 match points, and saved 3 match points before finally beating Roger Federer at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The match ended Roger Federer's 25-match winning streak.

4 April 2005: Federer wins again

Don't get me wrong, I like Roger Federer, but it's getting a bit tiresome to keep repeating the news: "Roger Federer has won a tournament".

This time victory came in Miami in the final against Rafael Nadal winning the Nasdaq-100 Open in the fifth set 2-6 6-7 7-6 6-3 6-1.

At one stage Nadal was two sets and 4-1 up, and he looked set to add another victory to his 1-0 record against Federer, but Federer fought back to eventually take victory with Nadal tiring in the final set.

After the semi-final, Andre Agassi had said about Federer:

"He's playing levels above everybody else ...He's proved that for a while now - 47-1 since the US Open. It's crazy."

21 March 2005: Federer on a roll

It was a difficult weekend for the cream of sport. The normally reliable, Michael Schumacher looks in for a difficult season; and none of Woods, Els, or Singh were able to win at Bay Hill.

It was left to Roger Federer to keep winning, which he did with ease beating world number two Lleyton Hewitt in the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells on Sunday.

Although he had not lost a set before the final there were some signs before the final that Federer might have trouble. Federer was upset about the pressures of television scheduling meaning that competitors had to play a semi-final and best-of-five final with only 16 hours of rest in between.

And after the game, Federer revealed, "The pressure is off and I'm relieved. I didn't sleep that well overnight because Lleyton was coming up. But once everything's over, it's a huge relief."

It doesn't bode well for Federer's challengers if he can come through to win in straight sets in such circumstances. Maybe rather than practicing they should be praying for a swift bit of global warming.

Federer, who warmed up for the final by practising with his girlfriend, Mirka Vavrinec, will be hoping that the weather in Miami will not be too fine, as last year he was inconvenienced by sunstroke and lost to 32nd seed Nadal 6-3 6-3 and failed to get into the last sixteen.

28 February 2005: Federer in repeat performance

It is quite possible that if Roger Federer didn't exist Ivan Ljubicic would now have won two tennis titles in a row, instead he has been the losing finalist in successive weeks.

This time, at the Dubai Championship trophy, it was a very different final from Rotterdam (see below). Federer came straight out of the blocks. Whereas last week he started badly but held his nerve to win, at Dubai Roger Federer was at one stage leading 6-1 3-1 0-30 (on Ljubicic's serve); eventually winning 6-1 6-7 (6-8) 6-3.

20 February 2005: Federer back to winning ways

It was tough, but Roger Federer came through to win the World Indoor Tournament in Rotterdam, beating Ivan Ljubicic 5-7 7-5 7-6.

Roger Federer has an extraordinary mental attitude. In an interview with the Sunday Times this morning, he said of his defeat by Marat Safin:

"...the more success you have the easier it is to deal with defeat. I didn't think too much about it even the next day. I woke up, the sun was shining. Sure, my foot was hurting, but there was nothing to worry about. I hadn't been robbed or attacked. Everyone I cared for was fine. It was not a question of blocking out the defeat, I just accepted having to live with the fact and, really, that's not too difficult."

Federer's Run Comes to an End

Marat Safat stopped Roger Federer's great run of victories by defeating the Swiss ace in a nail-biting five-set semi-final at the Australian Open.

Safin went on to take the title.

Federer in Qatar 2005

Roger Federer kicked off 2005, just where he left off in 2004. His victory in the final of the Qatar Open made it 14 straight victories in tennis finals.

Federer's 6-3 6-1 trouncing of Ivan Ljubicic was his 21st victory in a row. His last defeat coming in the Athens Olympics.

The next major test is the Australian Open. After his Qatar victory, Federer said:

"I am sure this win will give me great confidence going into the Australian Open."
