24 March 2005: Bobby Fischer Released
Bobby Fischer's stay in a Japanese immigration detention centre which lasted for nearly nine months ended today after an intervention from the Icelandic government.
It had not been an easy time for Fischer and included 4 months of solitary confinement after arguing with guards over a boiled egg.
Fischer was arrested last year by the Japanese authorities, as he was wanted by the United States for breaking international sanctions (his Yugoslavia re-match with Spassky). Fischer had lived unnoticed in Japan for a number of years with his fiancee, Miyoko Watai, a former Japanese chess champion, but was arrested when he tried to leave Japan for the Philippines.
On Monday, Bobby Fischer was granted Icelandic citizenship after a vote in their parliament. Since his victory over Spassky in Rekjavic 1972, Fischer has been regarded as a legend by many Icelanders.
It remains to be seen what action the USA will now take. They have already issued a "message of disappointment" to Iceland's government.
