Who is Scarlett Johansson?


She was born in New York on 22 November 1984.

Her mother, who was Jewish, and her father, who was a Danish architect, divorced when Scarlett was 13.

Scarlett Johansson got into acting as a child and studied at the Lee Strasberg Institute and the Children's Professional School in New York.

She appeared in various roles, but it was when she was twelve playing a fourteen-year-old in Robert Redford's The Horse Whisperer, that she first came to widespread public attention.

Subsequently, Scarlett Johansson played several prominent roles in the movies.

2003 was a particularly notable year for Scarlett Johansson as it saw her cast prominently in Girl with a Pearl Earring, and cast opposite Bill Murray in Lost in Translation.

Both roles were critically acclaimed and gained her Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress, as well as a Best Actress Bafta for Lost in Translation and a Bafta nomination for Girl With a Pearl Earring.

In 2004 Scarlett Johansson, who has regularly topped polls of the world's sexiest women or similar lists, became the official face of Calvin Klein's new fragrance.

The film credits continued with the likes of A Love Song for Bobby Long (for which she won another Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress), Match Point, and in 2008 both Vicky Cristina Barcelona (like Match Point directed by Woody Allen) and The Other Boleyn Girl.

Also in 2008, Scarlett Johansson married Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, however they split up in December 2010.

May 2008 saw another string to Scarlett's bow when she released her first album Anywhere I Lay My Head, a collection of songs by Tom Waits.

In 2009, Scarlett Johansson returned to the big screen as Anna Marks in the romantic comedy He's Just Not That Into You.

In January 2010 Scarlett Johansson made her Broadway debut to critical acclaim when she starred in Arthur Miller's A View From the Bridge.

According to Forbes, Scarlett Johansson was the top grossing actor of 2016. Her movies, which included Captain America: Civil War and Hail Caesar!, earned $1.2bn globally over the year.

In 2017, Scarlett Johannson filed for divorce from her second husband Romain Dauriac. They had one daughter.

In 2018, she dropped out of playing a transgender man in Rub & Tug.

In 2019 she starred in the box office success Avengers: Endgame. The cast included Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brie Larson, and Tom Hiddleston.

In 2020 she was nominated for a Bafta for best actress for Marriage Story and also for best supporting actress for Jojo Rabbit.

In October 2020, she married Colin Jost, a writer and comedian on Saturday Night Live.
