Jose Mourinho
Continued from Jose Mourinho biography Part 1
Jose Mourinho continued airing his forthright views later in the season when he challenged the media:
"I have read I have to prove a lot in English football. Sir Alex Ferguson is the only European champion in this country, nobody else, so I have to prove what?"
On 30th April 2005, after Chelsea beat Bolton they secured the Premiership title. Most pundits put Chelsea's success not just down to the money the owner, Roman Abramovich, had pumped into the club, but also to Jose Mourinho's confidence, team-building and tactics.
After the victory Jose Mourinho said:
"I want to stay with Chelsea the maximum time I can, so maybe I have to stay for longer than my current contract."
Indeed, on 4 May 2005, just a day after Chelsea lost out to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals, it was announced that Jose Mourinho had signed a new contract with Chelsea, pledging to stay until 2010.
On 1 June 2005, Jose Mourinho, Chelsea, and Ashley Cole were all found guilty in what became known as the Premier League's 'tapping-up' affair, where Cole without permission from Arsenal appeared to have been negotiating a contract with Chelsea.
In 2004/2005 and 2005/2006, not only did Chelsea win the Premiership but Mourinho was voted Premiership manager of the year in both years.
In 2006/2007, Mourinho and Chelsea won the Carling Cup and the F.A. Cup but failed to gain the Premiership and in the early stages of the 2007/8 season Mourinho left Chelsea 'by mutual consent'.
Jose Mourinho is married to Tami, and has two children, Matilde and José Jr.
Mourinho won coach of the year in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards, 2005.
After leaving Chelsea, Jose Mourinho remained popular in England and although he was many people's favourite to take over from Steve McClaren as England coach, nevertheless it emerged on 10 December 2007 that he had ruled himself out.
