Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson looked like he was back to his best form as he won his 28th career PGA tour victory and the first of 2006 at the BellSouth Classic.

It was a scintillating performance by Mickelson who shot 31 birdies. The 13 stroke margin of victory was the largest since Tiger Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 strokes.

Mickelson equalled the course record with a first-round 63 and took the tournament record after 36 holes with his 16 under par.

But there was more to come when the following week Mickelson won the 70th Masters by two shots at Augusta.

Mickelson has now overtaken Vijay Singh on the PGA Tour wins list.
