14 May 2005: Blatter criticises Mourinho and Rooney
Sepp Blatter this week came out with an extraordinary outburst:
"I appeal to Mourinho and Rooney. As stars at such a high level, they have a responsibility to fans as well as the game. With Rooney it is a question of education. He should receive a clip around the ear from the management. Mourinho is quiet on the bench. But he should be quieter after the match as well ..."
Surely the role of the FIFA President should be to make strategic decisions and not to offer opinions on individual personalities? In any case, Sven-Goran Eriksson came to Rooney's defence, saying that the 19-year-old was a sound role model.
