25 May 2005: Liverpool win Champions League in amazing style

Fantastic!

Once again football has confirmed that no dramatist (with the possible exception of Shakespeare) could match the drama of sport.

Liverpool came from 3-0 at half-time to level in the 90 minutes, survive extra time and eventually take the Champions League from the clutches of AC Milan on penalties.

With their fifth victory, Liverpool get to keep the cup and what's more they might get to keep their ace, Steven Gerrard, who said after the game:

"I'll be having talks very shortly and it's looking good."

Just like the F.A. Cup Final at the weekend, it is possible to argue that the better team lost, but that would be churlish. Liverpool showed amazing fighting spirit and indeed in the second half when they were chasing the game, Liverpool had a real purple patch.

AC Milan would obviously be disappointed to lose on penalties, but they have had their share of wins on penalties. It was ironic that their world-class striker, Andriy Shevchenko, who had an excellent game, missed a late double-chance (saved brilliantly by Dudek) as well as one of the penalties.
