Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi, Congress Party leader, was forced to resign on 23 March 2006 from both the parliament and her role as chairman of a specially-created National Advisory Council.

The Financial Times has the background to Sonia Gandhi's resignation.

Sonia is the widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated in 1991, and she surprised many when she turned down the position of PM after her general election victory in 2004.

Sonia Gandhi became leader of the Congress party officially in 1998 and was elected to parliament in 1999. In 2004 the Congress Party won the election in India.

Norman Kember

Norman Kember, a retired Professor from Pinner, Middlesex in England, was released in a rescue by multi-national forces on March 23, 2006.

Mr Kember, aged 74, had spent 117 days as a hostage in Iraq. Kember was one of four westerners seized on 26 November 2005 whilst in Iraq to support the Canada-based international peace group Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT).

Of the four hostages, only three survived. American Tom Fox had been shot dead. Kember and two Canadians, James Loney and Harmeet Singh Sooden were saved.
