Tom Cruise had a troubled upbringing. in particular he did not get on well with father.
Other important early films for Tom Cruise were The Outsiders and Risky Business in 1983, and Top Gun in 1986. 1986 also the release of an important film for Tom Cruise's destiny, The Color of Money. It was the film that brought him close to Paul Newman, who, in turn, got Cruise into motor racing, and thus he met his first wife to be Mimi Rogers. Rogers was previously married to Scientology counsellor Jim Rogers, and she introduced Cruise to Scientology, which he joined in 1990.
Other important film credits for Tom Cruise were Rain Man in 1988, where he formed an impressive on-screen partnership with Dustin Hoffman, Born on the Fourth of July (1989), for which he was Oscar nominated, Mission: Impossible (1996), Jerry Maguire (1996), another Oscar nomination for best actor in a supporting role, Magnolia (1999), Oscar-nominated again - this time for supporting actor.
Tom Cruise appeared alongside his second wife, Nicole Kidman in Days of Thunder (1990), Far and Away (1992) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
Cruise and Kidman split up in 2001 after more than 10 years together. They have two adopted two children, of whom they share custody. Tom Cruise then went out with Penelope Cruz, his co-star in Vanilla Sky. They stayed together for three years, splitting up in March 2004.
In the 21st century Tom Cruise continued to act in some notable films, for example, Minority Report (2002), The Last Samurai (2003), and alongside an acclaimed performance by Jamie Foxx in Collateral (2004).
In November 2006, Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes. They had a girl, Suri.
Tom Cruise fell out with Paramount and instead joined the management of Hollywood studio United Artists, owned by MGM.
In December 2008, it was announced that Tom Cruise and his Tropic Thunder co-star Robert Downey Jr had been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.
In February 2010, it was announced that Tom Cruise would play Ethan Hunt in a fourth Mission: Impossible film, scheduled for release in May 2011. A fifth, Mission impossible - Rogue Nation was to follow.
In June 2012, it was revealed that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were getting divorced.
Tom Cruise's other credits include playing Jack Reacher in One Shot and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
