Nikolai Valuev (sometimes spelt Nikolay Valuev) was born on 21 August 1973. He heralds from St. Petersburg in Russia. His father, Sergei, worked in a factory repairing radios and his mother, Nadezhda, worked in a military factory. Amazingly, his parents were both only 5 feet 5 inches tall.

Nikolai Valuev is the tallest and heaviest heavyweight boxing champion in history at 7 feet tall and weighing 325 pounds.

Before boxing, Valuev succeeded at other sports. He won a national basketball championship with his team at the junior level, and when he was 19, he won the national junior title in the discus.

Nikolai Valuev came relatively late in life to boxing when he was 20 years old. Initially he was an amateur boxer and also worked as a bouncer.

Valuev's first professional fight was his victory over John Morton on October 15, 1993.

On December 17, 2005, Nikolai Valuev became the first Russian in history to win a heavyweight world championship when he defeated the reigning WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz, whom he later beat again to regain the championship.

In December 2008, Valuev beat Evander Holyfield in a close fought contest.

At the time of his fight against David Haye in November 2009, billed as David versus Goliath, Nikolai Valuev had lost only once in 51 fights. His defeat was at the hands of Ruslan Chagaev in 2007. Valuev was beaten by Haye on points: 116-112, 116-112, 114-114

Nikolai Valuev married Galina in 2000, and they had a son, Grisha in 2003. Nikolai enjoys reading literature and writing poetry.
