Switzerland

Switzerland did not qualify for the World Cup finals in 1998 or 2002, and they only just made it to Germany in 2006.

The away-goal rule was their saviour, winning their two-leg play-off match against Turkey on away goals. It led to heated exchanges and Benjamin Huggel was punished with a six-game ban.

Switzerland are ranked 35th in the world and they have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals.

Neverthless, the Swiss should not be underestimated. Their performances have improved under Koebi Kuhn, including going 14 consecutive matches before their loss in Turkey.

Players to note include Arsenal's Philippe Senderos, Stade Rennes's Alexander Frei and the Swiss captain, AC Milan's Johann Vogel.

Switzerland came very near to beating France in their opening match which ended in a 0-0 draw. In the second match, goals from Alex Frei and Tranquillo Barnetta led to the Swiss defeating Togo 2-0.

Switzerland managed to qualify as top of their group after winning their game against South Korea 2-0.

In their last 16 game against Ukraine, Switzerland were anaemic and the match resulted in a 0-0 draw, but Switzerland were unable to convert any of their penalties and lost the shoot-out 3-0.
