Tennis News - August 2005

Roger Federer continued where he left off at Wimbledon, by winning the Cincinnati Masters final 6-3 7-5.

Andy Roddick felt an injury late in the second set, but as he himself said:

"He was already kicking my butt before that. I'll get it looked at and hopefully be OK by New York."

Federer has now beaten Roddick ten times in their last eleven matches.

In an attempt to explain his tournament success, Roger Federer said:

"I play my best in finals. That's why I'm Number 1, you know. There's no secret."

There is an important sporting psychological concept here: whatever happens in the past, do not let it affect you peaking at the right moment.

I believe that Chelsea's securing the premiership just before they were due to play Liverpool in the European Cup 2005 meant that they missed out on a critical level of adrenalin. Many teams and players fail to progress in tournaments after thay have a feeling of accomplishement from their most recent experience.
