Togo

Togo's recent football history has been up-and-down. After a faltering start, they achieved an excellent surprise qualification, ahead of 2002 World Cup quarter-finalists Senegal, to the 2006 World Cup finals.

However, having qualified, they seemed to take their foot off the gas, and morale lowered after a first round exit from the African Nations Cup.

As a result with just a few months to go, coach Stephen Keshi, who only took command in 2005, was replaced by German Otto Pfister. Chaos followed with a pay dispute and internal politics with various factions within Toga against Pfister's appointment.

The undoubted star for Togo is Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor, who was the top scorer in the African section of qualifying.

The former Monaco player, who is the Togolese Footballer of the Year, like his fellow striker Oulfade Adekanmi was actually born in Nigeria.

Togo lost their first match, with South Korea triumphing 2-1. In their second game they were beaten 2-0 by Switzerland and therefore could not progress in the tournament.
