Who is Angelina Jolie?

Angelina Jolie was born Angelina Jolie Voight on 4 June 1975 in Los Angeles.

She is the daughter of Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight, however she was brought up by her mother after her parents divorced when she was just one.

Angelina Jolie has numerous film credits, as well as a mass of media attention. Jolie appeared as a child in Lookin' to Get Out in 1982, but her film career started for all intents and purposes in the early 1990s. One of her earliest films was Hackers, where she met her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller. Angelina Jolie's significant roles after Hackers include two films made for TV. She won Golden Globe Awards and was nominated for Emmys for her roles in George Wallace (1997) and Gia (1998).

1999 was to see two significant roles for Angelina Jolie. In Pushing Tin, she co-starred with Billy Bob Thornton, who became her second husband. Also in 1999 Girl Interrupted was released and the following year Jolie won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Lisa Rowe.

Angelina Jolie continued to be busy. On the film front she played Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, whilst, as well as adopting a boy, she also became a committed Good Will Ambassador for the United Nations. All was not well in her personal life, however, and she and her second husband Billy Bob Thornton divorced in 2003. The void was to be filled with yet another co-star. In 2005 she and Brad Pitt starred in the hugely popular Mr And Mrs Smith, and after Brad Pitt split from Jennifer Aniston, he was to get together with Jolie.

In 2006, Angelina Jolie starred in The Good Shepherd, along with Matt Damon and Alec Baldwin. Tiscali had an extensive biography of Angelina Jolie, which included interesting details of her tattoos: "Alongside the Japanese sign for death, Billy Bob, H, two Native American symbols, a dragon and a black cross, she has marked on her body a Tennessee Williams line "A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages", and "Quod me nutrit me destruit" - What nourishes me also destroys me ..." Since they split Angelina Jolie had corrective surgery to remove the Billy Bob tattoo.

In July 2008 Angelina Jolie gave birth to twins. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie also had a daughter together, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, as well as 3 adopted children. Angelina Jolie came first in Channel 4's poll of the 100 Greatest Sex Symbols and was in Playboy's top 25 sexiest women.

Angelina Jolie's 2008 credits include Wanted and the Clint Eastwood film Changeling. In 2010 she was cast in the title role in the thriller Salt, and was cast opposite Johnny Depp in The Tourist.

In 2012, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt got engaged and they married in 2014.

In 2015, she starred alongside Brad Pitt in By The Sea, which she also wrote and directed.

In September 2016, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt citing irreconcilable differences.

In July 2017, she revealed that she had been diagnosed the previous year with Bell's palsy.

In 2021, Brad Pitt was granted joint custody of his children with Angelina Jolie after a lengthy court battle.

Their oldest child Maddox, aged 19, was not subject to the custody decision, but it applied to Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Vivienne and Knox.

In December 2022, she announced that she was stepping down from her role as an ambassador for the UN refugee agency UNHCR after more than 20 years.

On 31 December 2024, it was reported that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had reached a divorce settlement following an eight-year legal battle.
