Amanda Abbington grew up in Hertfordshire. Her father was a photographer.

Her early TV credits included such staples as Wycliff, The Bill, Casualty and Dream Team.

Her numerous credits since then have included playing Miss Mardle in Mr Selfridge and Mary Morstan opposite her partner Martin Freeman as Dr Watson in Sherlock. They had met whilst filming Channel 4's Men Only. They have two children Joe and Grace. Amanda and Martin split up and had been breaking up whilst still working on Sherlock.

The Independent reported, at the time of the announcement that Amanda was to take part in Strictly in 2023, that her partner was the escapologist and stunt performer Jonathan Goodwin, who was paralysed during a stunt.

Her stage credits include appearing in Stephen Moffat's The Unfriend.

In Strictly 2023, she was partnered by Giovanni Pernice.

Although she danced well in the early stages, towards the end of October she decided to withdraw from the competition.

In the summer of 2024, controversy brewed in the Strictly world, with various claims being made. Against this backdrop, Amanda Abbington was interviewed by the Sun on Sunday and told them: "I found Giovanni's behaviour unnecessary, abusive, cruel and mean. I couldn't sit back and let him do that to other people."

In September 2024, the BBC apologised to Amanda Abbington and upheld some of her complaints against Giovanni Pernice, but cleared him of the most serious allegations.

Trivia
Her son, Joe Freeman, played Jamie in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
