Bill Hicks was born on 16 December 1961 in Georgia, USA.

He began performing comedy sketches at his school with his best friend Dwight Slade.

Bill Hicks performed his first stand-up gig at the Comedy Workshop in Houston. Bill and his friend Dwight cycled to the venue after their parents assumed they had gone to bed.

Bill Hicks's early material was mostly about his family and school life.

Bill Hicks made his debut TV appearance in 1984 on Late Night with David Letterman.

In total he was a guest on Letterman twelve times, his final appearance which was supposed to air 5 months before his death, was cut by producers for being too controversial.

Hicks wrote music and released such albums as Rant in E-minor.

Bill Hicks was a friend of David Letterman, Denis Leary and Jimmy Pineapple.

In the early 1990s there was avid interest in his TV series Counts of the Netherworld for Channel 4 in the UK.

Hicks died in 1994, aged 32 from pancreatic cancer.

Hicks spent his last months at his family home in Arkansas being nursed by his parents.
