Tobias Vincent Maguire better known as Tobey Maguire was born on 27 June 1975 in Santa Monica, California.

Maguire's parents divorced when he was two. In 1993, his father, Vincent Maguire went into the bank opposite his home and presented the teller with a note demanding money and indicated he had a weapon. He was later caught and imprisoned.

Tobey Maguire's mother encouraged him to go into acting and he started drama class at 11 which led to various roles on television and commercials.

Tobey Maguire made his film debut in This Boy's Life, alongside Robert De Niro and Leonardo Di Caprio.

In 1997, Maguire's profile increased as he took parts in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm, and Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry.

The following year, he appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair's annual Hollywood issue.

Other significant films featuring Tobey Maguire include The Wonder Boys and The Cider House Rules, and the excellent Seabiscuit (2003), where he not only played jockey Red Pollard (losing 20 pounds for the role), but was also the film's producer.

Tobey Maguire is best-known for his leading role in the Spider-Man films.

Tobey Maguire told The Telegraph:

"After the first Spider-Man came out, the attention I was getting made me uncomfortable, and I retreated from being out very much in public. I didn't like the fame and attention and people asking me questions. I was very guarded, and I didn't like having my life on display."

Maguire nearly missed out on Spider-Man 2 because he was insistent that the shooting schedule be arranged around him. The producers were on the verge of replacing Maguire with Jake Gyllenhaal, but eventually relented.

In 2007 he was reunited with Kirsten Dunst in Spider-Man 3.

In October 2004 Tobey Maguire won the Phil Hellmuth Invitational - No Limit Hold'em 2004 National Championship of Poker in Los Angeles with a first prize of $95,480.

Andy Bellin told Phil Hellmuth, "This kid could be a legitimate top pro, and win many more of these things. It's amazing how quickly he has picked up the game."

In November 2006 Tobey Maguire and his then fiancée Jennifer Meyer, daughter of Universal Studios president Ron Meyer, had a baby girl.

In 2006, Tobey Maguire played Patrick Tully in Steven Soderbergh's The Good German and, in 2007, Maguire reprised his superhero role in Spider-Man 3.

In September 2007, Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer married in a private ceremony in Hawaii.

In September 2008, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Tobey Maguire was close to agreeing a deal for two more Spiderman films, however in January 2010 it was announced that Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi would not be returning for a fourth Spider-Man film.

In 2011, Tobey Maguire was cast in Baz Lurhmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby and in Ang Lee's adaptation of Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi.

In 2014, he played Bobby Fischer in Pawn Sacrifice.
