He plays the bass in the popular band McFly. They were the youngest band to chart at Number 1 with their debut album.

Previously he had been having an on /off relationship with The Saturdays singer Frankie Sandford, who had then become romantically linked to Wayne Bridge.

In November 2011, Dougie Poynter entered the jungle as a celebrity on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

In so doing he was following a pattern set by the other members of McFly: Tom Fletcher had appeared on The Cube, Danny Jones was a contestant on Popstar to Opera Star, and Harry Judd had entered Strictly Come Dancing.
