Who is Jacqui Smith?

She was Labour MP for Redditch between 1997 and 2010 and served as a government minister from 1999 to 2009, including as the UK’s first female Home Secretary.

She lost her seat in the 2010 General Election, beaten by Karen Lumley of the Conservatives. Many believe that her popularity dipped after the MPs' expenses scandal.

Jacqui Smith studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Hertford College, Oxford University and gained a post graduate certificate in education (PGCE) at Worcester College of Higher Education.

Before becoming an MP, she taught at Arrow Vale High School, Worcester Sixth Form College, and Haybridge High School.

After parliament, her roles have included being Chair of the largest NHS trust in England in Birmingham and a Children’s Trust in Sandwell.

She has also been a presenter and pundit on television and radio.

In 2020, Jacqui Smith became one of the celebrities on Strictly Come Dancing.

She was paired with Anton du Beke. They were the first couple to be voted off.
