Jennifer Hudson was born in Chicago on 12 September 1981.

She came to widespread public attention in 2004, when she was a finalist on the third season of American Idol.

In 2007, Jennifer Hudson won an Academy Award for her role as Effie in Dreamgirls, an adaptation of the Broadway musical.

In 2009, her self-titled debut album, which had sold 1.1 million copies, won a Grammy Award for best R & B Album.

The previous year, 2008, had brought a terrible personal tragedy when her mother, brother and nephew were killed by her estranged brother-in-law.

She has sung at President Obama’s inauguration, Super Bowl XLVII and the Academy Awards.

Jennifer Hudson is engaged to the wrestler David Otunga and they have a son David Daniel Otunga, Jr.

In 2016, she was revealed to be one of the coaches on ITV's The Voice in the UK in 2017.

In 2019, she was cast as Grizabella in the film adaptation of Cats.
