Miles Davis was born on 26 May 1926 in Illinois.
He began playing the trumpet at 13.
At 19, he became a member of the Charlie Parker quintet.
He was a jazz trumpeter who in the 1950s played arrangements by Gil Evans in a new style known as 'cool jazz'.
Miles Davis's quintet included John Coltrane in the 1950s.
In the 1960s Miles Davis was famous for fusing jazz and rock.
He had a gap in performing from 1975 to 1980.
Miles Davis died in 1991.
