Sir Norman Gibb Scorgie's Biography
Sir Norman Gibb Scorgie, C.V.O., C.B.E was educated at St Olaves, before becoming first in the first class of Law Tripos, Part II, in 1907 at Sidney Sussex, Cambridge and Whewell Scholar in International Law, in 1908.
He was Director of Legal Studies at Sidney Sussex College and Fitzwilliam Hall.
He served in WW1 where he was Lieutenant Colonel and was mentioned in despatches three times.
After the war, Sir Norman was appointed Deputy Controller of HM Stationery Office (working under William Codling), then Deputy Director-General, Ministry of Information, 1940–41; then Principal Assistant Secretary, Mines Department, 1941–42; and then Controller of HM Stationery Office and King’s Printer, 1942–49.
Because of his role, one can often find words such as 'Printed by Sir NORMAN GIBB SCORGIE, C.V.O., C.B.E., Controller of His Majesty's Stationery Office and King's Printer of Acts of Parliament' on parliamentary publications.
After leaving the Stationery Office he was Chairman of B. Winstone & Sons Ltd from 1949–55.
Sir Norman Scorgie was born on 6 October 1884, the son of Norman Scorgie, JP.
He died 26 March 1956, aged 71.
Sir Norman died intestate, leaving £14789.
