Pearl Mackie heralds from Brixton in South London.

She studied drama at Bristol University and then trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

She graduated in 2010.

Since then her notable credits include playing Anne-Marie Frasier in BBC1's Doctors in 2014 and performing in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time at the Gielgud Theatre.

However, her big breakthrough came in 2016, when she was cast as The Doctor’s new companion, Bill, in the BBC's Doctor Who.

When the news about Doctor Who was announced, Pearl Mackie revealed: "Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in - I can't wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series. I always loved stage combat at drama school so I can't wait to get on set and kick some evil monsters into the next dimension!"
