Background

Saoirse Ronan was born on 12 April 1994, in The Bronx, New York. Her first name is pronounced Sairsha.

Her parents Paul and Monica were a barman and a nanny who had moved to New York from Ireland, however he became an actor and they moved back to Ireland when Saoirse was just 3 years old.

Acting

Saoirse Ronan was brought up in County Carlow and as a youngster she got a role in The Clinic, an Irish TV show, which also featured her father.

However, she first came to widespread public attention when she played Briony Tallis in Atonement, for which she was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress. 

Her other notable credits include playing Susie Salmon in The Lovely Bones, for which she received a Bafta nomination, Irena in The Way Back and Agatha in The Grand Budapest Hotel.

In 2016 Saoirse Ronan was nominated for an Oscar - this time for best actress - for her role as Eilis Lacey in Brooklyn.

In 2018, she won her third Oscar nomination. This time it was for her performance in the title role of Lady Bird.

In 2019, she was cast as Jo in the film Little Women. She was nominated for a Bafta for the role. The character's sister Meg was played by Emma Watson.
