Sharon Stone was born on 10 March 1958 in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
Sharon Stone, whose IQ has been estimated at 154, studied at Edinboro State University of Pennsylvania and gained a degree in creative writing and fine arts.
When she was 17, Sharon Stone won a Miss Pennsylvania beauty contest and later became a model with the Eileen Ford model agency in New York.
Sharon Stone's film credits began with a small part in Woody Allen's 1980 film Stardust Memories.
It was in 1990 that she was propelled to fame with her role opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall.
Sharon Stone reached the attention of an even wider audience two years later, starring in Basic Instinct, where as The Independent puts it: "her character, a female murderer, crosses and then uncrosses her lower limbs to reveal that she's neglected to wear underwear."
She also won critical acclaim for her role in Martin Scorsese's Casino.
Sharon Stone's film credits also include Sliver, The Quick and the Dead, and Catwoman.
Her first marriage was to TV producer Michael Greenburg in 1984 and it proved short-lived. Her second marriage, which was to Phil Bronstein, also ended in divorce.
Bronstein had been editor-in-chief of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Stone and Bronstein have a son Roan whom they adopted in May 2000 when he was a week old.
Sharon Stone has also adopted two boys by herself: Laird Vonne and Quinn Kelly.
In October 2001, Sharon Stone spent eight days in hospital following a brain haemorrhage.
Sharon and her sister Kelly set up the charity, Planet Hope.
She became the face of Dior's anti-ageing skincare range.
