The Oscars

The Oscars or the Academy Awards as they are also known are awarded at an annual ceremony in the USA and are given for various roles in movies.

The first awards were presented on May 16, 1929.

It all stemmed from a dinner at the home of Louis B. Mayer a few years earlier, where those present decided to establish a group to benefit the film industry. It led to the founding of the International Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. 

The awards ceremony was first televised in 1953.

In 1966, the Oscars were telecast in colour for the first time.
