Marc Jacobs's Biography
Marc Jacobs was born in New York City on April 9, 1963.
His father died when Marc Jacobs was 7, and soon after he moved to live with his grandmother after falling out with his mother.
Marc Jacobs's grandmother taught him knitting and proved a huge influence in his life.
Jacobs studied at the High School of Art and Design and Parson's School of Design.
Whilst still in his early 20s Marc Jacobs formed a crucial association with Robert Duffy, who was at the time an executive at the Ruben Thomas sportswear company who hired Jacobs to design a collection.
Two years later he designed his first collection with the Marc Jacobs label.
In 1997, the first Marc Jacobs store opened. It was the same year that Robert Duffy and Marc Jacobs joined Louis Vuitton and transformed it from a luggage maker to a fashion company with stylish ready-to-wear and accessories.
In 2001, Jacobs and Duffy launched the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection.
Throughout the 21st Century the stores flourished and spread to Europe and Asia.
In 2007 a line of children's wear, Little Marc Jacobs was launched.
It is estimated that $2bn of Marc Jacobs-designed products are sold every year.
