Like his famous Portuguese counterparts, Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo, Simão Sabrosa went to Sporting's youth academy.
At 17 he scored on his debut for Sporting in their 3-0 win over Gil Vicente.
From 1999 to 2001 he had a stint at Barcelona before returning to Portugal when he was signed by Benfica, where he became captain and did not miss a penalty kick in roughly six years.
In 2007 he signed for Atletico Madrid with whom he won a UEFA Europa League medal in 2010.
Simão Sabrosa was the most-capped player in Carlos Quieroz's 2010 Portugal squad.
He had previously missed out on the Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup because of injury, but Simão Sabrosa was a regular in the Portugal side that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2006.
