Note: This is the biography of the Scottish actor James Harkness not the Broadway performer of the same name.

James Harkness was brought up in Glasgow by his mother. His father was an alcoholic.

He studied at King’s Park Secondary School and was interested in drama at an early age, attending the Gorbals Youth Community Theatre and the Citizen’s Theatre’s Young Company.

On his 18th birthday he was attacked with an axe in a lift in Glasgow and ended up in hospital.

James Harkness regards that moment as a turning-point in his life.

After taking an HNC in drama at Reid Kerr College in Paisley, he went to study at LAMDA in London.

Since then he has acquired numerous acting credits including playing Angus in Justin Kurzel’s film Macbeth, Winston Churchill’s war secretary A D Nicholl in Joe Wright’s film Darkest Hour and Elliot in Wild Rose.

His TV credits include playing Kev in Gangs of London and Foxy in Tin Star.

In 2019, he was cast as the victim of a vicious attack in The Victim, a BBC1 four-part legal thriller.
