Carlos Slim Helú was born on January 28, 1940 in Mexico City,
Carlos Slim's father came to Mexico from the Lebanon unaccompanied in 1902 when he was just 14 years of age. Carlos Slim's mother was born in Parral, Chihuahua, the daughter of Lebanese immigrants.
Carlos Slim Helú studied Civil Engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he also taught Algebra and Linear Programming.
By the time he was 26, Slim was believed to be worth $40m, but it was during the Latin American economic crisis of the early 1980s that he laid the foundations to his vast wealth buying struggling companies at low prices. He also took advantage of the privatisation of Mexico's national telephone company in the 1990s when he bought Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex).
Carlos Slim's philanthropy includes donating many millions of dollars to fund a research project in genomic medicine.
He married Soumaya Domit Gemayel. They had six children: Carlos, Marco Antonio, Patrick, Soumaya, Vanessa and Johanna.
In March 2010 Forbes calculated that Carlos Slim was the world's richest person, taking over from Bill Gates. Forbes estimated Carlos Slim's net worth as $53.5 billion. The following year, in 2011, Carlos Slim was once again the world's richest person according to Forbes, who calculated that his wealth had grown by $20.5bn to $74bn.
In 2016, Forbes pointed out that Carlos Slim had been badly hit by the election of Donald Trump and that he ranked number 4 in the world with a net worth of $49.7 billion.
