Philippe Starck's Biography
Philippe Starck was born in Paris on 18 January 1949. His career in design was influenced by his father who was an aircraft engineer and his mother who advised him to study design at Nissim de Camondo.
When he was 19, Philippe Starck set up a business making inflatable objects. In the 1970s, Starck started designing nightclub interiors.
Philippe Starck went on to design such well-received items as the Miss K lamp, the Louis Ghost chair, and the BaObab desk.
Philippe Starck told The Times: "If you have the most beautiful castle with nobody you love inside, it is shit. That is why you must spend less money on decoration and more money on finding the person you love. And then, once you’ve found that, you must have a good bed: for making love. And a good kitchen table – also for making love, and for eating."
Starck lives on the island of Burano in Venice and has an oyster farm in the south west of France. In total he has over 20 homes and a Pilatus PC-12 Swiss Army plane. His partner is Jasmine Abdellatif.
Philippe Starck is art director of Virgin Galactic and he intends being on their first space flight.
Philippe Starck's numerous awards include Designer of the Year, the Grand Prix for Industrial Design, the Design Oscar, and Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur.
In 2008 Philippe Starck invited would-be designers to bid for one of 10 places on a design course to be held in Paris in the BBC's documentary series Phillipe Starck's School of Design.
