Mark Shand was the brother of Camilla Parker Bowles and was an elephant expert who travelled round India.

In early 2005 Mark Shand was appointed the International Ambassador for Assam Province, and, in particular, Kaziranga National Park (KNP) to promote and conserve wildlife.

Mark Shand was the author of Travels on my Elephant, which recounts how together with the help of a Maratha nobleman, he purchased an elephant called Tara and rode her over 600 miles across India.

Shand learnt the skills of elephant driving and Indian ways.

Mark Shand also wrote River Dog: A Journey Down the Brahmaputra, an account of an epic Asian journey - this time with a dog. Other travel / adventure books by Shand include Skulduggery and Queen of the Elephants.

He died on 23 April 2014 in New York, after falling and hitting his head.
