Nancy Pelosi's Biography
Nancy Pelosi was born on 26 March 1940 in Baltimore.
Pelosi's late father, Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr, was Mayor of Baltimore for 12 years, having spent five terms in Congress. Her brother, Thomas D'Alesandro III has also been Mayor of Baltimore.
Nancy Pelosi graduated from Trinity College in Washington DC in 1962.
From 1981 to 1983 Nancy Pelosi was chair of the California State Democratic Party. From 1985 to 1986 she was finance chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
In 1987, Nancy Pelosi was elected as a Democrat to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sala Burton, representing California's Eighth District in the House of Representatives.
In 2001 Pelosi served as House Democratic Whip. The following year, in November 2002, the House Democrats elected her the first woman to lead a major political party in the USA.
On January 4, 2007, Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. On January 6, 2009, Nancy Pelosi was sworn in as Speaker for the second time.
In November 2016, the House Democrats re-elected Nancy Pelosi to an eighth term as House leader.
In January 2019, Donald Trump postponed Nancy Pelosi's scheduled trip to Brussels and Afghanistan by denying the use of military aircraft during a US government shutdown.
In September 2019, Nancy Pelosi opened a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump.
In November 2022, Nancy Pelosi, aged 82, announced she was standing down from leading the Democrats in the next Congress which was to start in January 2023. She would continue to represent her California district in the lower chamber of Congress.
