Alfonso Soriano was born on January 7, 1976 in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. Soriano was signed as a Free Agent with the New York Yankees in 1998. In February 2004 he was traded by the Yankees to the Texas Rangers (in exchange for Alex Rodriguez and cash).

Alfonso Soriano was acquired by the Washington Nationals in a December 2005 trade with Texas. Soriano had been insistent that he wanted to remain in his usual position of a second baseman, however in March 2006, after previous refusals he agreed to play in the outfield.

Previously, when Alfonso Soriano was at Texas, he clung to second base due to his status as a two-time All-Star at that position. Critics pointed out that his All-Star status was not through his defense, in which he regularly led all second basemen in errors.

Soriano's salary in 2005 whilst at the Texas Rangers was reported as $7,500,000.

At the end of 2006 Alfonso Soriano joined the Chicago Cubs.
