Brian Walpole became a pilot with the RAF at 18 and joined an operational fighter squadron.

After four years in the RAF, Walpole joined BOAC, a predecessor of British Airways, as a First Officer on the Argonaut aircraft. It was the start of a long career with BOAC and BA.

Walpole had flying and managerial responsibilities with Concorde. In 1977, Walpole commanded the Concorde, which flew the Queen from Barbados to London and the first supersonic commercial service from London to New York.

In 1982, Captain Walpole was promoted to General Manager of the British Airways Concorde Division, continuing to fly as a fully operational Concorde commander.

In 1988 Captain Walpole was awarded the OBE in The Queen's Birthday Honours.
