Amy Winehouse was born on 14 September 1983. Her father Mitch was a cab driver.
She was brought up in north London.
Amy was expelled from the Sylvia Young Theatre School for piercing her nose.
She then studied at the Brit performing arts school in Croydon.
Amy Winehouse's debut album Frank achieved commercial and critical success but it was her second album, Back to Black, including the single Rehab, which proved a huge hit. Back To Black was the biggest-selling album of 2007 in the UK.
In 2008 Amy Winehouse was diagnosed with early stage emphysema.
Amy Winehouse married Blake Fielder-Civil, having first met him in 2005. When Fielder-Civil left Amy Winehouse and returned to his ex-girlfriend it prompted many of the lyrics in Back To Black. The couple got back together but on 21 July 2008, Blake Fielder-Civil was jailed for 27 months for attacking James King a former pub landlord and perverting the course of justice.
At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, Amy Winehouse won Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best New Artist, Song of the Year (Rehab) and Record of the Year (Rehab).
In 2008, Amy Winehouse's Love is a Losing Game won Ivor Novello awards for best song musically and lyrically.
In January 2009, the BBC reported that Amy Winehouse's husband Blake Fielder-Civil was seeking a divorce on the grounds of her alleged adultery. They officially divorced on 16 July 2009.
In 2009 Amy Winehouse made her 13-year-old god-daughter Dionne Bromfield the first signing to her record label Lioness Records.
On 20 January 2010, the BBC reported that Amy Winehouse had admitted assaulting a theatre manager during a Christmas pantomime.
On 23 July 2011, Amy Winehouse was found dead at her north London home, aged 27.
