Who was Dave Myers?
Dave Myers was born and grew up in Barrow-in-Furness.He was best known for teaming up with Si King to form The Hairy Bikers, who became very popular for their cookery programmes and books.
The Hairy Bikers became the third most popular cookery book writers in the UK (after Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson).
Dave Myers worked as a furnaceman in a steelworks to finance his Master’s degree in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths, where he studied egg tempera and the work of the Old Masters.
He then joined the BBC as a make-up artist specialising in prosthetics.
Dave Myers worked on television series, such as Prime Suspect and Spooks.
In 2013, Dave Myers became one of the celebrities on Strictly Come Dancing. He had recently lost three stone and the Hairy Bikers had released a popular book The Hairy Dieters: How To Love Food And Lose Weight.
Dave Myers lived with his wife and step-children in Barrow-in-Furness. He married Liliana Orzac in Barrow, and he wore a kilt to mark his Scottish heritage.
In Strictly Come Dancing, Dave Myers was paired with Karen Hauer.
Dave and Karen were the sixth pair to be voted off.
In 2016 Dave Myers presented the 15 part BBC Two series The Hairy Builder.
In August 2019, the BBC Two announced that they had commissioned a new six part documentary series Hairy Bikers Route 66.
Other Hairy Bikers series followed including Hairy Bikers Go West.
In May 2022, Dave Myers revealed that he was undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer.
He died on 28 February 2024, aged 66.
