Glynn Purnell was born on 4 January 1975 in Birmingham, England.

Interested in food from an early age, he started work as an apprentice at the Metropole Hotel at the NEC where he ended up working for 6 years, leaving to become Chef de Partie at Simpson's Restaurant.

He got promoted to sous chef, a role which he also held at the 2 Michelin-starred Hibiscus restaurant in Ludlow.

In July 2003, he helped establish Jessica’s Restaurant in Edgbaston, in which he had a 25% stake and was head chef.

Jessica's gained a Michelin star in 2005.

In 2007, at the age of 32, he set up his own restaurant Purnell's, in Birmingham's financial district.

It was awarded its first Michelin star in January 2009.

Glynn Purnell's books include Rib Ticklers & Choux-Ins, and Cracking Yolks & Pig Tales.

In March 2017, Channel 4 announced that together with Rachel Allen, Glynn Purnell would be a judge on My Kitchen Rules UK,
