Brian McKnight was born in Buffalo, New York in 1969.

McKnight had a jazz-fusion band in high school, and he was the keyboard player, although he learned to play several instruments. When he was 15, Brian McKnight used to play pianos in bars and hotels. A couple of years later, he formed a band Spontaneous Inventions.

Brian McKnight got a recording contract with Mercury and started releasing soul albums from 1991.

He ended up having huge success, selling many millions of albums. The Independent commented how Brian McKnight found himself switching labels from Mercury, and his first single with his new label Motown, Back At One went to number one in America.

As well as his record releases, Brian McKnight has starred in Chicago, been host of BET's Soul Sessions and the host of 94.7 The Wave's The Brian McKnight Morning Show.

In 2009, Brian McKnight chose to play in Celebrity Apprentice for the charity, Youthville USA. He was the eighth celebrity to be fired.

McKnight loves playing basketball and has played guard for the California ABA basketball team the Ontario Warriors.
