Tom Hiddleston's Early Life

Tom Hiddleston was born on 9 February 1981 in London to Diana, a former arts administrator and the daughter of Lieutenant William Reginald Servaes; and James, a physical chemist.

Tom's younger sister Emma also went into acting, whilst his older sister Sarah became a journalist. 

Tom Hiddleston like his The Night Manager co-star Hugh Laurie was educated in the Dragon School, Eton, and Cambridge.

He gained a double first in classics from Pembroke College.

In 2005 he graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and was very quickly cast in the independent film Unrelated.

Credits and Awards

He then amassed various credits in theatre and won the Ian Charleson Award, which recognizes exceptional classical stage performances by actors under the age of 30.

He was also nominated twice for Best Newcomer at the Laurence Olivier Awards - winning for his performance in Cymbeline.

Significant television credits followed with roles in Miss Austen Regrets, Wallander and Return to Cranford.

He rejoined Joanna Hogg, who had directed Unrelated, when she cast him in Archipelago, and gained nominations for the BAFTA Rising Star Award and the Evening Standard Film Award for Best Actor.

In 2011 Tom Hiddleston was very active appearing in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, and Terence Davies’ The Deep Blue Sea; as well as one of his most notable roles playing the villain Loki, in Kenneth Branagh’s THOR.

He again took the role the following year in the Marvel movie The Avengers.

To prepare for his role as Loki Tom Hiddleston trained in the Brazilian martial art of capoeira.

In 2013, Hiddleston returned to his role as Loki in THOR: The Dark World.

He also played the title role in Coriolanus in London's Donmar Warehouse and won the award for Best Actor at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

His subsequent movies include Only Lovers Left Alive, Crimson Peak and High Rise.

In 2016 he was cast as Jonathan Pine in the BBC's The Night Manager.

In 2017, he was cast in the film Kong: Skull Island and in the title role of Hamlet on the London stage.

In November 2018, it was revealed that Tom Hiddleston would star in Betrayal, from March 2019, as part of the Pinter at the Pinter season.

In 2019 he starred in the box office success Avengers: Endgame. The cast included Scarlett Johannson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brie Larson, and Robert Downey Jr.

He played Will Ransome in the TV series The Essex Serpent.

In 2024, the BBC announced that Tom Hiddleston was to reprise his role as Jonathan Pine in two more series of The Night Manager.

Personal Life


In 2016, there were widespread reports of a romance between Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift.

He subsequently got engaged to Zawe Ashton and they one child.

Actually, Hugh Laurie was born in Oxford, but after Eton he went to Cambridge, where he acquired a Blue for rowing and also was the president of Footlights. In fact, he attended the same college as Tom Hollander of The Night Manager. Background check much?
