Helena Blackman's Biography
Helena Blackman from Locks Heath in Hampshire was 23 when she appeared on How Do You Solve A Problem like Maria?. Helena actually played the lead role of Maria in the Sound of Music whilst at Swanmore Secondary school.
In the BBC's How Do You Solve A Problem like Maria?, Helena Blackman was regularly nominated for departure by the public but each time Andrew Lloyd Webber chose to save her. Eventually Helena Blackman progressed to the final and reached the last two, but just lost out to Connie Fisher in the final public vote.
Helena Blackman went to the Guildhall School of Acting and as well as performing herself, teaches children to perform. Helena also waitresses part-time.
The Guildhall School of Acting website shows that whilst she was there Helena Blackman performed in Little Mary Sunshine, George M!, Jason & the Argonauts, Chicago,The Dancing Years, and Much Ado About Nothing.
Helena Blackman also has credits as a Spirit of Fire singer at The Royal Albert Hall and a cabaret singing soloist.
Since her appearance as a potential Maria, Helena Blackman has appeared as Gypsy Rose Lee with Julia McKenzie in Gypsy and reached the final of the Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre voice of musical theatre award.
Helena Blackman was also reported to be cast as Dorothy in the Leicester Haymarket's Christmas 2006 production of The Wizard of Oz.
Helena Blackman also played leading lady Nelly Forbush in Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.
