Michael Edwards better known as Eddie the Eagle was born in Cheltenham on 5 December 1963. Like his father, he was a plasterer, but Eddie the Eagle was to come to prominence in the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988.

He was the first Briton to compete in ski-jumping at an Olympics and had qualified because he had represented Great Britain at the 1987 World Championships and was 55th in the world rankings.

He ended up finishing last in both the 70m and 90m events at Calgary but won public acclaim for his determination against the odds to qualify. He even had to borrow his skis.

Since that time, he has done a variety of notable things including reality TV appearances, hosting a radio show, and writing a book.

He also gained a degree in law.

In 2016 a film was made based on his life with Taron Egerton playing Eddie the Eagle.

He was one of the celebrities chosen to compete on Dancing on Ice in 2024.

Eddie the Eagle was paired with Tippy Packard. They were the seventh couple to be eliminated.
