John Fashanu was born in London on 18 September 1962.

He and his brother Justin were brought up in a Barnardo's care home before being fostered.

John's football career started with Cambridge under 18s and then Norwich and Lincoln City, but really got going when he was transferred to Millwall in 1984.

He then had a succesful stint playing centre forward for Wimbledon from 1986-1994. Whilst at Wimbledon, the club got promoted to the first division (the name of the top league at the time) and also beat Liverpool to win the FA Cup in 1988.

John Fashanu was transferred to Aston Villa for £1.62 million from Wimbledon, however, he retired from playing football the following year, having been badly injured.

He played twice for England.

After football came numerous television appearances, notably co-presenting Gladiators with Ulrika Jonsson and coming second on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here!

In December 2022, The Independent reported:

"The life of Justin Fashanu, the first professional footballer in England to come out as gay, and his brother John, is being adapted into an ITV drama by Bafta-nominated writer Kwame Kwei-Armah."

In January 2023, John Fashanu became one of the celebrities on Dancing on Ice. He was paired with Alexandra Schaumann.

They were the first couple to be voted off.
