Born in Reading in 1971, Ian Waite started dancing early in life when his father attended classes and dragged an initially reluctant Ian and his brother along.

According to Ian, his father started going to dance classes when his parents split up, in order to meet single women. Ian Waite was ten years old then, but just three years later he was dancing on the open competition circuit and Ian became a Latin American champion.

Ian Waite lived in Holland for 4 years.

Ian Waite partnered Melanie Walker from when he was 14 until he was 21.

His early achievements included winning the European Youth Championship.

Ian's normal dancing partner was Camilla Dallerup. Ian and Camilla started dancing together in 2004. In the International Championships at the Royal Albert Hall they reached the semi-finals and they reached the final of the British National Dance Championships. In July of 2005 they were runners-up in the UK Closed Championships.

Subsequently, Ian Waite hooked up with Natalie Lowe. Their 2016 tour was called A Touch of Class.

In 2010, Ian Waite was one of the professional dancers that were not scheduled to appear on Strictly Come Dancing. However, because of a bereavement, Brendan Cole had to drop out for a week and so in the interim Ian Waite partnered Michelle Williams.

In series 7 of Strictly Come Dancing, Ian Waite partnered Jade Johnson. Ian and Jade were dancing well but had to pull out in week 10 because of an injury to Jade.

In series 6 of Strictly Come Dancing, Ian Waite partnered Jodie Kidd. They came sixth. Ian Waite and Denise Lewis were runners-up in the second series.

Ian partnered Zoe Ball in the third season of Strictly Come Dancing, and they finished up in third place.

However, in the fourth series of Strictly Come Dancing, Ian Waite partnered Mica Paris, who was the first woman to be voted off.

In series five of Strictly Come Dancing Ian Waite's dance partner was Penny Lancaster-Stewart and they were eliminated in week 6.
