Who is Iwan Thomas?

Iwan Thomas was born in Farnborough on 5 January 1974.

While studying Sports Studies and Leisure Management, Iwan Thomas joined Newham and Essex Beagles and set out on his athletic career.

He won numerous accolades in athletics including a gold medal in the 4x400m at the 1997 World Championships in Athens, which came to him unusually 11 years later in 2008, two years after he retired in 2006, when it was revealed that Antonio Pettigrew of the USA’s gold medal winning team had taken illegal substances and this meant that the British relay squad of Iwan Thomas, Roger Black, Mark Richardson, and Jamie Baulch were promoted to world champions.

On an individual level Iwan Thomas won gold in the 1998 European Championship and was the British 400m record holder with a time of 44.36 seconds.

When he was young Thomas also excelled at rugby union and BMX racing, winning over 400 trophies in the latter.

Since retiring from athletics Iwan Thomas has been a regular in the media. notably being part of Channel 4’s presenting team for the London 2012 Paralympics, and being a regular on The One Show.

Iwan Thomas was awarded an MBE in 1998.

In 2015 he became one of the celebrities on Strictly Come Dancing. He was partnered with Ola Jordan. They were the first pair to be voted off.

In 2017, Iwan Thomas took part in Bear Grylls' Celebrity Island.
