Motsi Mabuse was born in South Africa on 11 April 1981.

She studied at the University of Pretoria, but then became interested in dance and competed successfully in South Africa and Germany.

She starred on Let’s Dance (the German version of Strictly Come Dancing) initially as a professional dancer and then a judge.

The Mirror reported how Motsi was devastated at the death of her half-brother Neo. The article also gives some background on Motsi Mabuse's early life.

In July 2019 the BBC announced that Motsi was to take over from Darcey Bussell as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing.

Her sister Oti Mabuse was one of the professional dancers on the show. Motsi is roughly 10 years older than Oti. They were previously seen together on TV in Celebrity Gogglebox, along with their other sister Phemelo Mabuse-Mitchell.

In 2022, Motsi wrote a memoir entitled Finding My Own Rhythm.
